Markets Enter August on a High: Dow Prints Record as ISM Beat Powers Dollar; Crude Holds Above $80 on Iran Uncertainty

August opened with a distinctly risk-on tone, yet with a defensive undercurrent that reflects the market's split personality. The Dow Jones printed a fresh record high, the US Dollar Index firmed on a robust ISM Manufacturing print, and Treasury yields eased — a combination that shows investors pricing in economic resilience while still leaving room for eventual Fed accommodation. Crude, meanwhile, refused to break lower after Iran flatly denied that any negotiations with the United States were underway, keeping the geopolitical risk premium firmly intact.

The Equity Backdrop

The Dow closed at a record as large-cap tech reasserted its leadership. Meta gained 6%, Amazon rose more than 4% to become the latest name to breach the $3 trillion market cap milestone, Nvidia advanced nearly 3%, and Alphabet and Microsoft both climbed close to 5%. The 10-year Treasury yield fell almost six basis points to around 4.688%, easing financial conditions and supporting duration-sensitive growth names.

Technically, the Dow broke decisively above 52,900 resistance and is advancing toward 53,336. A test of that level could invite short-term profit-taking, with the former resistance at 52,908 now flipping to fresh support. Pullbacks into that zone remain buying opportunities within the prevailing uptrend.

Crude: Iran Rejects the Diplomatic Narrative

WTI reclaimed $80 after Tehran's statement contradicted the White House framing that had underpinned Trump's decision to cancel planned military strikes. Iran said no negotiations were underway and no meetings had been scheduled — a message that immediately reintroduced supply-disruption risk and forced traders to reprice the geopolitical premium.

WTI has rebounded cleanly from the $79.00-$77.76 support zone, and short-term momentum points toward $83.00-$84.00. Crude remains a headline-driven asset, however. A decisive break below $77.76 would reopen the door toward $76.00, while sustained diplomatic progress would cap upside near the top of the range.

Dollar: ISM Reasserts the Growth Story

The DXY firmed toward the psychologically key 100.00 level after a much stronger-than-expected ISM Manufacturing print. The headline rose to 55.6 from 53.3, comfortably above the 54.0 consensus. The internal composition validated the strength: the Employment Index surged to 52.8 from 49.7, New Orders improved to 56.7, and Prices Paid moderated slightly to 71.1 while remaining elevated. Demand is firm, hiring intent is recovering, and cost pressures — though softening — are far from resolved.

The dollar is now consolidating just below 100.00. A decisive break would extend the recovery toward 100.46, while rejection sends DXY back toward the 99.60-99.41 support zone. Friday's July Nonfarm Payrolls will be the decisive catalyst.

Gold, Euro, Yen

Gold slipped further, establishing fresh resistance at $4,064 per ounce. A modest rebound from $4,020 emerged, but the broader trend remains bearish, with the psychological $4,000 level as the initial downside target.

EUR/USD retreated as the dollar firmed, though the pullback appears corrective within the broader uptrend. Eurozone Manufacturing PMI was revised marginally lower to 51.9 but still marked its strongest reading since April, underscoring regional resilience. Support at 1.15000 offers a buying opportunity in line with the uptrend.

USD/JPY hovered near recent lows following coordinated Tokyo-Washington intervention. Finance Minister Katayama warned further action remained on the table. The 158.06 area now caps the pair as key resistance, with the broader bearish structure intact. The upcoming BoJ June Meeting Minutes may add volatility.

Week Ahead

Friday's July NFP is the marquee release. ADP, JOLTS, and ISM Services will provide the supporting reads. A stronger labor market reinforces the Fed's hawkish lean and extends dollar gains; a softer print revives easing bets and pressures the greenback.

The Takeaway

The market is comfortable owning risk while the growth story holds — but every headline out of Tehran and every wage-growth surprise this week can flip the tape. Position sizes should reflect that duality.
