Yen Extends Rally on Joint US-Japan Intervention

WikiFX
| 2026-08-03 11:00

Abstract:The Japanese yen extended its sharp rally against the U.S. dollar following the first coordinated FX intervention by Washington and Tokyo since 2011, pushing the broader dollar index lower.

The Japanese yen continued its sharp ascent against the U.S. dollar following the first coordinated currency intervention by Tokyo and Washington since 2011. This historic market action has triggered broader dollar weakness across major currency pairs, signaling a shift in global exchange rate dynamics that Indian retail traders and macro participants need to monitor closely.

Coordinated FX Intervention Drives Yen Higher

The yen strengthened nearly 1% against the dollar in early Asian trading on Monday, pushing the USD/JPY pair down to a session low of 155.21 before stabilizing near 156.32. This extends a surge of more than 3% from last week after Japans finance ministry confirmed the joint yen-buying operation. Bank of Japan data indicates Tokyo may have purchased up to $58.97 billion worth of the currency. The rally received further support after U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated Washington would participate in additional joint interventions if disorderly yen moves re-emerge. U.S. President Donald Trump also backed the coordinated action, stating that Japan had sought assistance and that the move benefits the global economy.

Bank of Japan Maintains Hawkish Bias

While the intervention provided immediate relief for the yen, underlying monetary policy remains firmly in focus. The Bank of Japan kept its benchmark interest rate unchanged at 1% on Friday but maintained a hawkish stance. Policymakers signaled readiness to tighten policy further if inflation tracks their forecasts. The yen had recently hit a 40-year low against the dollar, pressured by wide yield differentials between Japan and global peers. Analysts at MUFG noted that while the joint intervention clears out yen short positions in the near term, underlying fundamentals will need to shift to sustain a durable decline in the USD/JPY pair.

Broad Dollar Weakness and Cross-Asset Moves

The forceful yen-buying intervention exerted heavy pressure on the broader U.S. dollar. The dollar index slid more than 1.5% last week, hovering near 99.78. Capitalizing on the greenback's retreat, the euro climbed to a one-and-a-half-month high of 1.1535, while the British pound traded near a two-week top. Commodity-linked currencies also advanced, with the Australian dollar rising 0.3% and the New Zealand dollar adding 0.13%. Concurrently, crude oil prices slipped after geopolitical tensions eased when President Trump announced an attack on Iran had been called off ahead of scheduled talks.

Focus Shifts to US Labor Data

With immediate intervention risks priced into the market, foreign exchange traders are pivoting to Fridays U.S. nonfarm payrolls report. Markets are assessing the data for clues regarding the health of the American labor market and its potential impact on Federal Reserve policy. Analysts at OCBC noted that a resilient labor market or stalled disinflation could increase pressure on the Fed to reinforce its anti-inflation stance ahead of the September FOMC meeting.

The coordinated currency intervention establishes a strict threshold against disorderly exchange rate depreciation by major global authorities. As market participants weigh these official actions against upcoming U.S. employment data, Forex trading conditions remain highly sensitive to shifting yield differentials and central bank policy trajectories.
