The final week of the month and quarter has started with a sharp decline in GOLD and a broader correction across U.S. equity indices.
Quarter-end trading conditions can often bring increased volatility as institutional investors rebalance portfolios and adjust exposures. With significant options expirations also in focus, markets could experience larger-than-usual price swings and potentially reduced directional clarity.
Political developments in the United States may also begin attracting greater market attention as the calendar moves closer to the U.S. primary-election period, adding another potential source of uncertainty to an already active macroeconomic environment.
Another important event to watch is the upcoming U.S. PCE inflation data. As one of the Federal Reserve's closely watched inflation measures, the release could provide an additional catalyst for volatility during the final trading sessions of the month and quarter.
Levels to Watch
GOLD
Following the latest decline, the first significant support zone appears within the relatively wide 4,000–4,150 area.
The first important resistance is now located around 4,200.
A sustained break below 4,000 could increase downside pressure and potentially trigger a deeper sell-off. On the upside, a recovery above 4,250 could improve the technical picture and potentially allow buyers to regain momentum.
For now, the 4,000–4,250 area may therefore become particularly important in determining GOLD's next directional move.
Key levels:
Support: 4,000–4,150
Resistance: 4,200
Downside trigger: sustained break below 4,000
Upside trigger: recovery above 4,250
U.S. Indices
Nasdaq 100 (US100)
The broad 30,000–31,200 area remains a major zone of fluctuation. As long as the index continues trading within this range, a clear directional signal may remain difficult to establish.
A sustained break below 30,000 could increase the probability of a more significant correction.
S&P 500 (US500)
The 7,700–7,800 area remains an important upper zone and a key technical barrier for any continuation higher.
On the downside, 7,680 is an important level to monitor. A sustained move below this area, particularly if accompanied by a break below 30,000 in the Nasdaq 100, could signal the beginning of a broader seasonal correction.
Under such a scenario, a 5–10% correction in major U.S. indices could become possible, although confirmation through subsequent price action would still be required.
Key levels:
US100 — Range: 30,000–31,200; downside trigger: break below 30,000
US500 — Resistance: 7,700–7,800; support to monitor: 7,680
With quarter-end positioning, inflation data and potentially significant technical breaks converging within the same period, the final trading sessions of September could bring substantially higher volatility across GOLD and U.S. equity indices.
