U.S.-Iran Tensions Flare Again as Oil Prices Break Above $100

Brent crude has returned above the key $100-per-barrel level following its July pullback. On September 8, the U.S. and Iran exchanged attacks again, with U.S. forces targeting Iranian oil tankers and Iran retaliating against a U.S. military base in Jordan. The confrontation marked one of the largest military exchanges between the two sides in nearly seven months of conflict.

Any path toward negotiations would likely need to address two key issues: access and control surrounding the Strait of Hormuz and Iran's nuclear weapons capability. However, escalating military activity has made diplomacy increasingly difficult. Iran has also indicated that it could expand maritime restrictions into surrounding waters, adding further pressure to global energy markets.

The escalation comes ahead of this week's U.S. CPI report and could reinforce concerns that inflation will remain elevated. If diplomatic progress remains stalled, higher interest rates combined with geopolitical risks could weigh heavily on risk assets, potentially triggering broader selling across U.S. equities and global financial markets.

According to the EIA's latest Short-Term Energy Outlook, oil flows through the Strait of Hormuz had gradually recovered from levels seen during the blockade, while greater use of alternative shipping routes offered some relief to supply conditions.

However, renewed escalation on September 8 could lead to tighter restrictions. We therefore expect disruptions to potentially persist through year-end, keeping regional crude production below pre-conflict levels.

Global petroleum inventories have declined by approximately 400 million barrels since the beginning of 2026. With inventories falling, transportation becoming more difficult, and shipping restrictions increasing, crude oil could remain above $80 per barrel through year-end, although significant volatility is likely.

Unless the U.S. and Iran return to formal negotiations, a meaningful decline in global oil prices appears unlikely in the near term.

U.S. Crude Production Remains Resilient

Despite higher global oil prices and declining inventories, U.S. crude production continues to expand. Output has risen steadily from approximately 12.5 million barrels per day in 2024 and could reach roughly 14.5 million barrels per day by 2027.

The production breakdown shows the Lower 48 as the largest contributor, reflecting continued expansion in U.S. onshore shale production. Growth is expected to slow to roughly +0.2 million barrels per day in 2026 before accelerating again in 2027, suggesting a cyclical rather than linear growth pattern.

Overall, the U.S.-Iran conflict is having a much greater impact on oil prices than on U.S. crude production. Resilient domestic supply gives the Trump administration greater strategic flexibility in confronting Iran.

Higher oil prices also strengthen cash flow and drilling incentives for U.S. shale producers, potentially supporting further production growth. Conversely, a sudden diplomatic breakthrough and sharp decline in oil prices could weaken those incentives.
