Abstract:OANDA Securities is moving to shut down MetaTrader 4, with new orders set to stop after the close of trading on 25 September 2026.

OANDA Securities is moving to shut down MetaTrader 4, with new orders set to stop after the close of trading on September 25 before the platform enters a restricted phase and is ultimately withdrawn from service in November.
The timetable leaves MT4 users with significantly less time than the final shutdown date might suggest. From the market opening on September 28, customers will generally be able to close existing positions but will no longer be able to open new ones through MT4. The platform itself is scheduled to cease operation after the close of trading on November 27.
For traders who have built their strategies around MT4, the September deadline is therefore the more urgent date. Waiting until November could leave users unable to establish fresh positions through the platform for almost two months before the service disappears completely.
OANDA has pointed to tighter cybersecurity requirements and the need to strengthen protection for customer assets and personal information as reasons for the change. The broker has also indicated that MT4 is an ageing platform whose development and maintenance environment makes it increasingly difficult to meet modern security requirements. The company is directing customers towards MetaTrader 5 as the successor platform.
The transition could prove more complicated for experienced traders than simply installing a different application. MT4 users frequently depend on automated trading systems, custom indicators and templates that have been developed specifically for the platform. These tools are not automatically compatible with MT5, meaning traders may need to rebuild or replace parts of their trading environment before the deadline.
The issue is particularly important for customers running Expert Advisors, commonly known as EAs. An automated strategy that performs normally on MT4 cannot simply be assumed to work identically on MT5. Traders using such systems may need to test their strategies, check software compatibility and review execution behaviour before moving live positions.
OANDA has outlined different arrangements depending on the account and server being used. For customers on the Tokyo MT4 server, positions and balances remaining when the service closes are scheduled to be transferred to MT5 standard accounts over the November 28 to November 29 weekend. Customers who hold balances without open positions have been encouraged to move funds earlier to an MT5 account, fxTrade or a TradingView account. Users of the New York MT4 server are expected to retain access to trading through alternative platforms after the shutdown.
For anyone in Malaysia using an overseas broker or an older trading platform, OANDA's MT4 shutdown is a warning against leaving operational decisions until the last minute. A platform change can affect positions, automated strategies, access to funds and the ability to trade when markets move fastest. In volatile markets, being technically unprepared can become a financial risk in its own right.
