Australia dollar on longest weekly winning streak since 2020

WikiFX
| 2026-08-21 17:00

Abstract:The Australian dollar is set for its longest weekly winning streak since 2020, trading at 0.71412 against the US dollar on August 21, 2026. The rally is driven by a weakening greenback after the US Treasury doubled its long-term bond buyback program, plus Australia's 10-year yield holding above 5%.

Default Image

The Australian dollar is set to close out its longest weekly winning streak since 2020, according to a Reuters report, as a weakening US dollar and elevated Australian bond yields keep the currency supported. The Aussie traded at 0.71412 against the US dollar on Friday, August 21, 2026, up 0.39% on the day.

The rally comes as the US dollar index slid toward 98.8 on Friday, on track to lose nearly 1% for the week. The greenback's slide follows the US Treasury Department's announcement that it would at least double the size of liquidity-support buyback operations covering securities with maturities from 10 to 30 years, a move aimed at containing long-term borrowing costs.

What is driving the Aussie higher

The Australian dollar's gains are closely tied to the dollar's weakness. The US dollar index fell below 99 on Wednesday, August 19, its lowest since late May, after the Treasury announced it would double its long-term buyback program. The index held around 98.8 on Thursday, hovering near its lowest level in three months.

The Treasury's expanded buyback plan heightened market volatility and boosted demand for safe-haven metals and other currencies at the expense of the greenback. The dollar index fell sharply on Wednesday after the announcement, and by Friday the DXY exchange rate had slipped to 98.7453, down 0.12% from the previous session.

Australian yields stay elevated

Supporting the Aussie is the yield on Australia's 10-year government bond, which remained above 5% at 5.0310% on August 21. Higher yields tend to make a currency more attractive to yield-seeking investors, adding to the Australian dollar's appeal against a weakening US currency.

The dollar's broader picture

The US dollar index measures the dollar against a basket of currencies including the euro, yen, pound, Canadian dollar, Swiss franc and Swedish krona, with the euro the largest component at 57.6%. Over the past month, the US dollar has weakened 2.35%, though it remains up 1.05% over the last 12 months.

US economic data for July 2026 showed an inflation rate of 3.40%, a federal funds rate of 3.75%, and an unemployment rate of 4.10%. Trading Economics global macro models and analyst expectations project the dollar to trade at 99.44 by the end of the quarter and 97.92 in 12 months' time. Historically, the dollar reached an all-time high of 164.72 in February 1985.

What to watch

For retail traders, the current environment highlights how central bank policy signals and government debt operations can move currency markets in a short window. The Australian dollar's winning streak reflects a broader rotation away from the greenback, but currency moves can reverse quickly as data and policy expectations shift. Investors should track upcoming US economic releases and Treasury communications, and remember that leveraged forex trading carries significant risk of loss.
