A common explanation is that higher long-term Treasury yields increase the opportunity cost of owning technology stocks, putting pressure on valuations. However, this DCF-based interpretation is incomplete. It does not explain why Treasury yields and technology stocks had previously risen together, only for their relationship to turn sharply negative near the 5.33% level.
The deeper issue may be the rapid expansion of private-sector financing driven by the AI capital expenditure boom, which is increasingly competing with government borrowing for capital.
When financial-system balance-sheet capacity becomes scarce, investors must compare the returns available from credit tied to high-growth industries with those offered by long-duration Treasuries. AI-related companies often have greater tolerance for elevated borrowing costs, while investors remain confident in their ability to service debt.
