Yen Intervention Rally Unravels Ahead of Pivotal RBA Call

WikiFX
| 2026-08-11 11:00

Abstract:The yen has surrendered nearly half the gains from the rare US-Japan currency intervention announced on 31 July 2026, drifting back to around 158.50 per dollar. As the RBA's 11 August policy decision approaches, strategists see the Australian dollar poised to retest 35-year highs against the yen, with rate differentials overshadowing Tokyo's market-smoothing efforts.

Default Image

The yen's short-lived rally following last month's rare joint intervention by Washington and Tokyo is unravelling, with the currency surrendering nearly half its gains within a week. As traders turn to the Reserve Bank of Australia's policy decision on 11 August, focus is shifting from official support to stubborn rate differentials.

The coordinated move by the US Treasury and the Bank of Japan, announced on 31 July 2026, propelled the yen to 155 per dollar from just above 163. By 7 August, it had drifted back to around 158.50.

The Intervention That Couldn't Hold

The joint operation was a rare US effort to support another major currency, reflecting concern that prolonged yen weakness could fuel inflation in Japan and destabilise global markets. Yet the effects proved fleeting.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said intervention can send market signals but only policy can turn the currency's direction. Bank of America noted the short-term objective of breaking 155 was touched only briefly before the yen slipped again.

Daleep Singh, chief global economist at PGIM, warned the strategy could “backfire spectacularly,” cautioning speculators might amplify any reversal by selling yen and Treasurys together.

RBA Decision Day Looms

Attention has pivoted to the RBA's 11 August policy announcement. The central bank is widely expected to hold rates, though swap markets price roughly a 50 per cent probability of another quarter-point hike by year-end. Governor Michele Bullock reinforced the hawkish tone late last month, affirming policymakers would not hesitate to deliver additional hikes, a stance sharply at odds with the Bank of Japan's accommodative posture.

Rate Differentials Drive the Aussie-Yen Trade

The Australian dollar-yen cross closed around 111.52 last week, recovering after plunging more than 4 per cent toward 109 following Tokyo's intervention. Strategists now see the Aussie poised to climb toward a 35-year high against the yen.

David Forrester, senior FX strategist at Crédit Agricole, said the RBA will likely remain hawkish and this, combined with fading intervention effects, should be positive for Aussie-yen. Mahjabeen Zaman, head of FX research at ANZ Group, said further Japanese intervention appears unlikely given clear US signalling.

Diverging Forecasts and the Road Ahead

Nick Twidale, chief market analyst at AT Global Markets Australia, expects Aussie-yen to target 113.38 with stronger resistance near 114.80. Commonwealth Bank of Australia FX strategist Samara Hammoud offered a contrasting view, forecasting a slide toward 108 by end-Q3 as the RBA holds steady before eventually cutting.

The yen's trajectory now hinges less on intervention and more on policy paths in Tokyo, Washington, and Sydney. With the RBA holding firm and the Bank of Japan showing no urgency to tighten, the forces that pushed the yen to multi-decade lows remain. Intervention can buy time, but it cannot rewrite the macroeconomic script.
