"They Want to See Your Face": ATFX Cambodia's CEO on Trust

In under a year, ATFX Cambodia secured the No. 1 ranking by trading volume from the Securities and Exchange Regulator of Cambodia for May 2026, opened a new Phnom Penh branch, and marked its first anniversary. CEO Alexander Lessells spoke with Finance Magnates on August 3, 2026, about building trust where clients still want to see a face before depositing a dollar. Cambodia Investment Review also interviewed him on July 14.

Lessells, half British and half Caribbean, leads around 50 staff in a full standalone operation, not a sales outpost.

Six Months If You Are Lucky

Cambodia is not entered casually. ATFX Cambodia holds a derivatives license from SERC, with the National Bank of Cambodia adding its own strict guidelines.

“You'd be very, very lucky to hit six months to get up and running,” Lessells said, “and that's without rushing.” The minimum investment for a derivatives license is approximately one million dollars, excluding compliance, finance, HR, and sales staff. Once licensed, every product requires SERC approval, marketing must carry clear risk warnings, and guaranteed returns are prohibited.

Face-to-Face Trust

Cambodian clients actively ask about local licensing. ATFX uses its SERC license as a differentiator against offshore operators. “A lot of our clients understand that we are licensed, but they don't understand the scrutiny we've gone through to get this license,” Lessells said. “We definitely use it as a marketing tool.”

Deposits range from twenty or fifty dollars to around one thousand dollars. The firm runs educational seminars two to three times weekly and hosts about twenty clients at its office twice a week. Webinars draw twenty-five to sixty prospective clients.

FX and gold dominate trading, with indices a distant third. Gold carries particular weight in Cambodia as a store of value woven into daily life.

Global Backing, Local Ambition

ATFX Cambodia sits within a group operating across twenty-four locations worldwide with licenses from nine international regulators. Lessells described the parent as a top-ten global broker whose institutional liquidity reserves ensure unrestricted client withdrawals.

The group is building an AI-driven platform, the AT Hub, for lead management and client inquiries. As of August 2026, it was roughly eighty percent built and in testing. ATFX is also working with SERC on bringing ATFX Connect, its institutional arm, into Cambodia.

A Team That Had Never Flown

Earlier in 2026, ATFX flew the entire Cambodia team, including the cleaner, to the group's annual gala in Korea. Many had never been on a plane or left the country.

Lessells frames the firm around three pillars: world-class innovation, premium client service, and absolute regulatory compliance. The first anniversary and branch opening drew H.E. Sou Socheat, Director General of SERC, alongside Chairman Seav Koaw Ing. In a market where trust is earned face to face, showing up at scale is the strategy.
