Africa's 10 Strongest Currencies in July 2026: Naira Absent

WikiFX
| 2026-08-04 13:00

Abstract:A July 2026 ranking of Africa's ten strongest currencies by nominal exchange rate against the US dollar places the Tunisian dinar first at 0.34 USD, with the Libyan dinar and Moroccan dirham following. Nigeria's naira did not make the list.

Default Image

A ranking of Africa's strongest currencies by nominal exchange rate against the US dollar has placed the Tunisian dinar at number one, while Nigeria's naira failed to make the top ten. The list, based on data as of 3 July 2026, highlights the persistent gap between North African and sub-Saharan currencies.

The ranking measures each currency by how many US cents one unit buys, reflecting nominal strength rather than purchasing power or economic size. A single Tunisian dinar was worth about 34 US cents, more than double its closest rival.

Tunisia Leads the Pack

The Tunisian dinar (TND) has held the top spot for several years. A separate analysis by TRT Afrika, using Forbes' currency conversion calculator and xe.com data, found that as of 25 July 2023, one US dollar bought 3.04 Tunisian dinars, already the continent's strongest. The Libyan dinar followed at 4.77 per dollar and the Moroccan dirham at 9.79.

By July 2026, the dinar remained at about 0.34 USD, supported by a managed exchange-rate regime overseen by the Central Bank of Tunisia, which maintains foreign exchange controls to limit volatility.

The Complete July 2026 Ranking

The top ten as of 3 July 2026: Tunisian dinar at 0.34 USD, Libyan dinar at 0.16 USD, Moroccan dirham at 0.11 USD, Ghanaian cedi at 0.09 USD, Botswana pula at 0.074 USD, Seychellois rupee at 0.072 USD, Eritrean nakfa at 0.07 USD, South African rand at 0.062 USD, and the Namibian dollar and Swazi lilangeni both at about 0.061 USD.

Libya's position is anchored by substantial oil reserves, with hydrocarbon exports as the primary source of foreign currency inflows. The Namibian dollar and Swazi lilangeni are pegged one-to-one with the South African rand, so their dollar values move in lockstep with the continent's most actively traded currency.

What Makes a Currency Strong

Currency strength is not simply a function of economic size. Countries with small GDPs can maintain higher-valued currencies than much larger economies, depending on foreign exchange reserves, export revenues, interest rates, and whether the currency is freely traded or managed.

According to Forbes, a strong government with well-established rule of law and constructive economic policies helps attract investment, promoting a strong currency. Exchange rates fluctuate continuously in response to economic data, geopolitical events, and monetary policy shifts.

Where the Naira Stands

Nigeria's naira, despite being the currency of Africa's largest economy by GDP, did not appear in the top ten. The ranking measures nominal exchange value rather than economic heft or purchasing power parity, highlighting the divergence between economic size and currency valuation across several major African economies.

Exchange rates are shaped by trade balances, inflation differentials, and central bank policy. For Nigeria, ongoing foreign exchange reforms have kept the naira under pressure even as the country's output remains among the continent's largest.
