Have you ever entered a trade after a clear breakout, only for the price to suddenly reverse

and hit your stop loss? What happened likely wasn't bad luck, but a calculated trap by

market makers. The real difference between a professional and an amateur lies in reading

the intentions of smart money. This is where SMT divergence shines as the ultimate ICT filter to avoid liquidity traps and fakeouts.

Markets Do Not Move Randomly: Asset Correlation

Institutional algorithms do not evaluate any asset in isolation. Markets are an interconnected web; there is positive correlation (like EUR/USD and GBP/USD, or Gold and Silver) and

inverse correlation (like EUR/USD and the DXY). When this price harmony suddenly breaks,

an SMT signal is formed.

What is SMT Divergence?

The Smart Money Technique (SMT) is a pattern that occurs between two correlated assets

when one breaks a previous high or low, while the other fails to make the same break. This

structural divergence sends you a clear message: the breakout was merely a liquidity run

(a trap), and the real buying or selling power supports an upcoming price reversal.

The Primary SMT Models

  • Bullish SMT: One asset forms a higher low, refusing to drop, while its correlated pair

breaks its low. This is conclusive evidence of institutional accumulation.

  • Bearish SMT: One asset fails to surpass its high, while the other breaks its high (a bull trap). A clear signal of distribution.

  • Inverse SMT: Applied to inversely correlated assets, such as the DXY failing to break

its low despite the EUR/USD deceptively breaking its high.

Trading Strategy: From Signal to Execution

SMT divergence is a confirmation filter integrated into a comprehensive system. To build a

professional setup, follow these steps:

Overall Context: Identify a key level (Order Block or liquidity pool) on higher

timeframes like the Daily or 4-Hour charts.

Liquidity Run (Turtle Soup): Watch for the price to reach the zone and quickly sweep a high or low to trigger stop losses.

SMT Confirmation: Open the chart of the correlated asset; if it refuses to make the same

break, the filter is complete.

Execution: Drop to the 15-minute or 5-minute timeframes and wait for a Market Structure

Shift (MSS) confirmation. Enter from a Fair Value Gap (FVG), place your stop loss behind the liquidity sweep, and target opposing liquidity zones for a risk-to-reward ratio of 1:3 or more.
