A calculated romance fraud nearly ensnared veteran Hong Kong actress Strawberry Yeung, 61, after an unknown man spent two deliberate months cultivating her trust before demanding she hand over HK$300,000, equivalent to approximately RM156,411, under the guise of a business investment opportunity.

Yeung, a former second runner-up at the 1990 ATV Miss Asia Pageant, disclosed the incident publicly through her social media platforms, recounting how the encounter began at a social gathering where a man in his 20s approached her. Despite the generational gap, which Yeung herself acknowledged with characteristic humour, the two exchanged contact details after the man impressed her with what appeared to be genuine entrepreneurial ambition.

What followed was a textbook grooming operation. The perpetrator flooded Yeung with messages at disciplined intervals each day, morning, afternoon and night, weaving in small gestures of affection and concern. His communications ranged from routine welfare checks such as asking whether she had eaten breakfast or reminding her to dress warmly in the rain, to overtly flattering terms of endearment. He addressed her as “fairy sister,” a Chinese expression reserved for women of refined and otherworldly beauty, while simultaneously circulating photographs of himself at golf courses, in business meetings and at upscale travel destinations. The imagery was deliberately curated to project the appearance of wealth and professional standing.

After two months of sustained contact, the facade gave way to the solicitation. Claiming a sudden and temporary cash flow crisis, the man requested that Yeung invest HK$300,000 into one of his purported business ventures. To sweeten the proposition, he promised full repayment within 24 hours alongside a 5% return, with assurances that the capital would double in short order.

Yeung was not persuaded. She identified the scheme immediately as a variant of what investigators and fraud specialists widely refer to as a “pig butchering” scam, an increasingly sophisticated form of long-term online fraud in which perpetrators construct artificial emotional bonds with their targets over weeks or months before steering them toward fictitious investment platforms or urgent financial requests. The term itself is drawn from the practice of fattening livestock before slaughter, a grim metaphor for how fraudsters deliberately cultivate victims before moving in for the financial extraction.

Rather than complying, Yeung confronted the individual directly and with considerable force. She challenged him on whether he genuinely believed she, at 61 years of age with decades of life experience behind her, could be so easily deceived. The fraudster severed contact immediately after the confrontation, a behavioural pattern entirely consistent with operators of this type of scheme, who move swiftly to abandon targets once exposure becomes evident.

Yeung subsequently used her public platform to issue a broader warning, urging particular caution among older single women, a demographic that fraud researchers consistently identify as disproportionately targeted by romance scam operators. Perpetrators, she noted, deliberately seek out individuals they perceive as socially isolated or emotionally vulnerable, manufacturing intimacy as a financial instrument rather than a genuine human connection.

The case carries sharp relevance for Malaysian audiences. Pig butchering scams have emerged as one of the most financially devastating fraud categories afflicting the region, with Malaysian authorities reporting losses running into hundreds of millions of ringgit annually across romance and investment fraud combined. The Communications and Digital Ministry as well as Bank Negara Malaysia have both intensified public awareness campaigns in recent years, yet the sophistication and patience of these operations continue to outpace general consumer awareness. The fact that even a public figure with access to information and social resources came within a conversation of being defrauded underscores precisely how calculated and convincing these schemes have become. For everyday Malaysians, the lesson is unambiguous: unsolicited warmth from strangers, particularly when followed by financial requests, warrants immediate and serious scrutiny.
