Singapore Dollar Holds Tight Range as FOMC Looms

WikiFX
| 2026-07-29 15:00

Abstract:The Singapore dollar is consolidating in a tight range against the US dollar ahead of the FOMC rate decision on 28 July 2026. UOB analysts flag 1.2925 as a critical support level for USD/SGD, while MUFG Research notes markets have priced a 38% chance of a Fed rate hike, with elevated US yields and Middle East tensions continuing to support the greenback.

The Singapore dollar is locked in a narrow range against the US dollar as markets brace for the Federal Reserve's rate decision, with traders watching whether the greenback's six-day rally has run its course.

According to United Overseas Bank (UOB) analysts Quek Ser Leang and Lee Sue Ann, the USD/SGD pair has entered a consolidation phase. The pair eased to 1.2950 before recovering to close near 1.2970 on 25 June, snapping a six-session winning streak with a 0.08% decline.

USD/SGD Rally Cools After Six-Day Climb

The US dollar's push against the Singapore dollar gathered pace, with USD/SGD touching 1.2991 on 24 June before momentum began to fade. UOB had maintained a positive US dollar stance since the prior week, reiterating on 24 June, when spot sat at 1.2965, that the greenback “remains positive, and the next technical target is 1.3000.”

On 25 June, with USD/SGD at 1.2975, UOB noted the pair appeared to be unwinding from overbought conditions, forecasting any decline would likely stay within a 1.2955 to 1.2990 range. The pair dipped to 1.2950 before rebounding to close largely unchanged. The FXStreet report was produced with the assistance of an artificial intelligence tool and reviewed by an editor.

The 1.2925 Floor Traders Are Watching

UOB has flagged 1.2925 as a strong-support level. A breach below that threshold, the analysts warned, would indicate that the 1.2991 peak recorded on 24 June represents the ceiling of current US dollar strength against the Singapore dollar.

For the immediate session on 26 June, UOB projected USD/SGD would trade between 1.2950 and 1.2980, characterising the price action as a range-trading phase. The US dollar needs to build on its gains soon, or the consolidation could signal the rally has topped out.

FOMC Decision Keeps Currency Markets on Edge

Ahead of the FOMC decision on 28 July, markets retained a hawkish bias, with about a 38% chance priced in for a 25-basis-point Fed rate hike at the upcoming meeting, while fully pricing in a hike for September, according to MUFG Research analyst Lloyd Chan in a report published on 28 July.

The FOMC decision is likely to be a key market catalyst. While no policy change was expected, the focus was firmly on the Fed's guidance on whether policymakers remain inclined to tighten policy.

Broader Dollar Strength Remains Intact

Elevated US yields and ongoing Middle East tensions continued to support the US dollar as of 28 July, MUFG noted, even as oil prices retreated. The decline in oil prices provided a breather for several Asian currencies, with the Indian rupee leading gains, rising 0.7% against the dollar.

Still, MUFG warned that Middle East tensions could escalate rapidly. US tariff policy has also returned to the spotlight, with the Trump administration working to rebuild its tariff framework after the Supreme Court struck down global reciprocal tariffs earlier in the year.
