Malaysian investors are once again being reminded of the dangers posed by online investment scams after a retired resident in Miri (Sarawak) lost RM367,000 to a fraudulent investment scheme promising unusually high returns.

According to Miri district police, the victim lodged a report after discovering that the investment scheme he had committed substantial savings to was entirely fictitious. Investigations found that the retiree had initially been approached by an unknown individual through an online messaging or social media platform before being introduced to what appeared to be a lucrative investment opportunity.

As is common in many investment scams, the fraudsters gradually built the victim's trust before encouraging him to make a series of financial transfers. The scheme reportedly promised attractive returns within a short period, while creating a sense of urgency and exclusivity designed to persuade the victim to invest larger sums.

The retiree subsequently made multiple transfers into bank accounts provided by the suspects. However, when he later attempted to withdraw his investment and the profits he had supposedly earned, he was informed that additional payments were required to complete the withdrawal process.

The promised returns never materialised, and by the time the victim realised he had been deceived, he had lost RM367,000.

Police are investigating the case under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating, an offence punishable by up to 10 years' imprisonment, whipping and a fine. At the time of writing, authorities have not disclosed whether any arrests have been made.

While the financial loss is significant, the case reflects a growing pattern of investment fraud rather than an isolated incident. Miri has seen a steady stream of similar scams in recent years, with victims collectively losing hundreds of thousands and even millions to fraudulent investment schemes.

Although the tactics may vary, the underlying approach remains largely the same. Victims are typically contacted through platforms such as WhatsApp, Facebook or other social media channels before being introduced to fake trading platforms or unlicensed investment programmes. Fraudsters often display fabricated account balances or investment profits to encourage victims to deposit additional funds.

When investors eventually attempt to withdraw their money, they are commonly told that taxes, administrative charges or processing fees must first be paid. These payments simply result in further losses, with the promised withdrawals never taking place.

Authorities continue to advise investors to exercise caution before participating in any investment opportunity, particularly those received through unsolicited online messages. Investment offers that guarantee high returns with little or no risk, pressure investors to act quickly or request repeated payments should be treated as significant warning signs.

Before committing funds, investors are encouraged to verify whether an investment company or individual is authorised through the Securities Commission Malaysia's Investment Checker and to confirm bank account details using the Royal Malaysia Police's Semak Mule platform. These simple checks can help identify suspicious entities before money is transferred.

Anyone who suspects they have become the target of an investment scam should immediately contact the National Scam Response Centre (NSRC) by dialling 997, as early reporting may improve the chances of disrupting fraudulent transactions.
