Abstract:The People's Bank of China conducted CNY 325.5 billion in seven-day reverse repo operations on July 27, 2026, at an unchanged rate of 1.40%, injecting short-term liquidity into the banking system through open market operations.

The People's Bank of China (PBOC) pumped CNY 325.5 billion into the financial system on Monday through seven-day reverse repurchase agreements, a move aimed at managing short-term liquidity conditions in the world's second-largest economy.

The operation, conducted in the open market on July 27, 2026, carried an interest rate of 1.40%, according to an official statement from the central bank.

What the PBOC Announced

The central bank injected CNY 325.5 billion via its standard seven-day reverse repo facility. In a reverse repo, the PBOC purchases securities from commercial banks with an agreement to sell them back after a set period, in this case seven days, temporarily adding cash to the banking system.

The operation was confirmed through a brief notice published by the central bank on Monday morning, as reported by state-affiliated financial media.

The Rate Stays at 1.40%

The PBOC held the operation rate steady at 1.40%, unchanged from previous seven-day reverse repo operations. The rate serves as a key short-term policy signal, guiding interbank lending costs and influencing broader funding conditions across China's financial markets.

By keeping the rate unchanged, the central bank signalled no shift in its near-term monetary policy stance, even as it moved to address liquidity demand.

Why the Injection Matters

Open market operations like Monday's reverse repo are a primary tool the PBOC uses to smooth liquidity fluctuations in the banking system. When short-term funding needs rise, often around tax payment deadlines, month-end regulatory checks, or seasonal cash demand, the central bank steps in to prevent cash crunches that could push up short-term borrowing costs.

The CNY 325.5 billion injection suggests the PBOC saw sufficient liquidity demand to warrant a sizable operation, though the central bank did not specify the exact trigger in its announcement.

Reading the Signal for Markets

For foreign exchange and fixed-income traders watching China's monetary policy, the size and rate of reverse repo operations offer real-time clues about the PBOC's liquidity posture. A large injection at a steady rate typically indicates the central bank is accommodating demand without loosening policy further, a neutral-to-supportive signal for short-term money market rates.

The operation comes as global markets continue to monitor China's economic trajectory and the PBOC's broader approach to balancing growth support with financial stability.
