U.S.-Iran Conflict Escalates Sharply as Airstrikes and Retaliatory Attacks Intensify

Tensions between the United States and Iran have deteriorated rapidly following the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). Over several consecutive nights, U.S. forces launched multiple rounds of airstrikes against Iranian targets, prompting Tehran to retaliate by striking U.S. military assets across the Middle East, including unmanned naval vessels near Bahrain and military installations in Kuwait.

A senior military advisor to Iran's Supreme Leader warned that if Washington continues its attacks, Iran's armed forces will move into a phase of “full-scale offensive and destruction.” Iran's Supreme Leader also declared the Memorandum of Understanding with the United States to be “null, void, and without any value,” vowing to deliver what he described as “a lesson the United States will never forget.”

Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced the launch of Operation Lightning, claiming that maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz has fallen to zero. Tehran warned that the strategic waterway would remain closed as long as the United States continues what it calls provocative military actions.

Meanwhile, power generation and desalination facilities in Kuwait have come under repeated attacks, while Jordan intercepted multiple Iranian missiles and remains on its highest level of military alert. Israel's Chief of the General Staff stated that the Israeli military is fully prepared to resume combat operations immediately if necessary.

President Donald Trump stated that the United States will continue applying military pressure on Iran through sustained strikes and warned that Washington could assume control of the Strait of Hormuz if circumstances require. He also claimed that Iran has resumed communication with the United States, while emphasizing that any previous agreement is effectively “over.” Tehran, however, denied seeking renewed negotiations and warned that any military escalation would be met with an immediate response.

The conflict's regional spillover has become increasingly evident. Iran has launched strikes inside Syria for the first time, while the United States plans to deploy additional aerial refueling aircraft to support Israel. At the same time, Israel continues its “indefinite” military presence in Lebanon, Gaza, and Syria, further escalating tensions across the region.

The sharp decline, and in some cases complete halt, of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz has significantly increased the geopolitical risk premium embedded in global crude oil prices. Both Brent crude and West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude have surged as fears of supply disruptions dominate market sentiment. Although Iranian oil exports had shown signs of recovery, the renewed conflict has once again clouded the outlook. Market analysts warn that a prolonged closure of the Strait could trigger another significant upswing in global energy prices.

The continued escalation between the United States and Iran has shattered the fragile balance established by the temporary agreement. Successive rounds of airstrikes and retaliatory attacks have transformed the Strait of Hormuz into one of the world's most critical geopolitical flashpoints for energy security. President Trump's hardline stance and Iran's uncompromising response underscore the severe breakdown in mutual trust, raising the likelihood of further military confrontation and diplomatic deadlock.

In the near term, oil price volatility and safe-haven demand are expected to remain the primary drivers of global financial markets. Over the longer term, lasting stability in the Middle East will depend on both sides returning to meaningful negotiations, reaching an enforceable ceasefire agreement, and ensuring the security of maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz. Until then, geopolitical tensions are likely to remain one of the most significant sources of uncertainty for the global economy and energy markets, requiring investors to closely monitor future developments.
