Market Overview
Spot gold bottomed out in Asia on Monday (August 21) after earlier hitting a fresh more than five-month low of $1,884.70 per ounce, pressured by concerns that the Federal Reserve will keep interest rates at higher levels for longer, with the dollar index holding near a more than two-month high and US Treasury yields recouped most of Friday's losses. At the same time, this week will see Fed Chair Powell speak at the Jackson Hole annual conference, amid concerns that the Fed may issue a hawkish view.
The vast majority of economists polled by Reuters said that while the Fed's rate-hike cycle was likely over, a slim majority now expected the central bank to wait until at least the end of March before cutting rates.
U. S. crude traded near $81.26 per barrel, after rising nearly 2% on Friday on signs of a slowdown in U.S. crude output and a looming export cut from Kuwait, but both benchmarks also ended their longest weekly winning streak since 2023 as concerns about global demand growth mounted.
With no major economic data to be released this session, watch for changes in market expectations on the global economic outlook and Jackson Hole annual meeting.
