IndustryCedi claws back 1.2% as GoldBod steps in, but forex bureaus still charge GH¢12.15 per dollar
Ghana's cedi has found some breathing room. After GoldBod intervened in the foreign exchange market, the local currency appreciated 1.20% against both the US dollar and the pound sterling, closing at GH¢11.65 per dollar and GH¢15.57 per pound on the interbank market, according to MyJoyOnline. On the street, the picture is less generous. At forex bureaus, the dollar is still going for GH¢12.15. 【Two rates, one market】 The 50-pesewa gap between the interbank quote and the bureau price is not unusual. Interbank rates reflect large wholesale trades between banks, while bureaus deal in cash and smaller amounts, and price in their own costs and risk. That spread is effectively what ordinary users pay for convenience, and it tends to widen when the market is nervous. 【What the intervention does, and does not do】 GoldBod is Ghana's state-backed gold body. When it steps into the market, it adds dollar supply, which eases pressure on the cedi. An intervention changes the balance of buyers and sellers on a given day; it does not fix the exchange rate. A single session's gain is a data point, not a trend. 【Who notices first】 Importers pricing goods in dollars, families converting money at bureau counters, and anyone holding cedi savings feel these moves before anyone else. For them, the useful number is not only the headline interbank rate but the price actually quoted at the counter. Before converting money or using a trading platform, check that the bureau or broker is licensed and that the rate offered is in line with prevailing market levels.
